In 22 weeks I will be running my first half marathon, and what better one to run then the Disney Princess Half Marathon?!
It all started a few years ago when Caitlin asked if I would ever run a half marathon or a marathon with her. My response was that only if it was the Disney Princess Half. I never really gave it much thought after that and time passed. Then earlier this year, the idea to take an epic Disney World trip came into play and ultimately six of us decided to go. As we were in the initial planning stages, we stumbled upon the fact that that exact race would be occurring the day after we left. Well what a concidence! Caitlin made the call that she was going to stay the extra night and run it no matter what, and asked me if I would run this with her. Initially, I had to give it some thought. It is not that I did not want to, but I have never been a very active person so I just wanted to make sure I would commit to training so I could do well. But within 24 hours, I knew that OFCOURSE I was going to run this with her. Chances like that just do not occur every day, the timing was fateful really. So we decided we would run it, and we would run it as a team! (We still race individually but we could some really cool team swag and get to pick a team name). The best part is getting to dress up as well! (Stay tuned for what our costumes will be).
Within a few days, Caitlin’s Dad had worked out a ” Learn to Run” training program for 8 weeks. For those not familiar with it, it is basically just running intervals that increase as the weeks go up. You start out with say 30 sec run and 5 minutes walking and move to a higher running interval, like 10 minutes running and 2 minutes walking. It teaches your body how to get used to running. It is designed so that anyone can teach themselves how to run. We completed that training program and then without further ado we were given our actual marathon training schedule!
That is taking me through the next 22 weeks, and boy am I excited/nervous for the whole process. I love being able to physically and mentally push myself into an endurance I never thought possible. I love having a routine to look forward to. I love feeling healthier and more fit. I love the peace of mind running gives me and most of all I love that I am doing this with my best friend and soul sister 🙂
Keep looking for a few more training posts, as this is an adventure that I sure do want to share. It is without a doubt a dream I never knew I even had, and a something more than planned that I am so so so looking forward too.
