“Packing” for Two Years Abroad

So before I even get into my packing list for this venture, I will mentioned that I AGONIZED over WHAT to pack all of this in for almost a year. I finally made a decision in January.

But I flipped flopped between taking my 70L Dueter backpack that was my pal during Europe, or my super big suitcase or both etc. Finally, after realizing that I did not want to carry a 70L backpack around again, at all. I scratched that off and decided to start from scratch.

Then it was a choice between, do I take a hybrid backpack? Or just a suitcase? FINALLY i came across Tortuga backpacks, and  went with the AIR as it fit my petite size and a new 26″ classy suitcase from HEYS. I hope this was the right choice!

Now onto WHAT on earth do you take on a two year “trip” to the UK from Canada?

The choice is ultimately up to you. There is no wrong or right answer. You can’t take everything, and what might be important to one person, will not be important to another. I chose to focus on sentimental things and gadgets rather then clothes, and I still know that I packed way too many clothes.

I knew that this would be a struggle from the beginning, so I decided to start packing very very early, even for me. And I also made the decisions to do a few “practice packs” before hand so that I could go through my chosen stuff every time, and hopefully cleanse it.

After three trial runs of packing, I decided to leave it at that and take what I wanted since it did all fit and I was under the weight limit.

So here is what will be in my suitcase, backpack and tote bag …

The Shoes.

Inside my Tortuga. The essentials to survive a flight. I-pad, Chocolate, Pillow, Guidebooks and my Sola Bear that my best friend made for me.

All my toiletries, make up, jewelry, and hair stuff.

All the random misc stuff I needed to bring, in my suitcase. A mix of sentimental, gifts, practical and just plain random.

A super full suitcase, filled with all the clothes. It took multiple tries but this is the final pack!

Again, there is no right or wrong answer to this and it might even feel super overwhelming at times but just pack what you think you will really want and miss the most 🙂 Almost anything can be bought so focusing on the sentimental items seemed more important to me.

  1. I love to see how others pack up their entire lives! I too am leaving for Europe for 2 years (a flight in less than a week now!) and I’ve actually purged all my material belongings for charity. Of course I kept the sentimental things for my dad to keep in his attic, but I stripped everything down to 3 casual outfits, 2 work outfits, and 2 pairs of shoes. I have to say, living with the bare essentials feels great!
