I spent most of February tied up with one book, which I just could not get into and so it took me awhile to finish. I did take a break and read a quick YA novel that came from my BookBub collection though.
The Dragonbone Chair by Tad Willimas: I decided to read a fantasy series as it is something I have not done in ages. So I randomly chose the Memory, Sorrow and Thorn Trilogy by Tad Williams and hoped for the best. Unfortunately I am not enjoying it all that much. It has all the elements that a good fantasty adventure should have, but I struggled to become attached to the plot! I think it just took some time getting used to the new world and a new style of writing. I will admit that I am a bit more invested in Book 2, and will finish the series out. The story follows a young kitchen boy named Simon on a quest to retrieve magical swords in order to help save his world. He makes unexpected friends along the way and sets off on quite the adventure while the rest of the world is torn apart by an epic war.
Embers, Wings of War by Karen Hopkins: This book is the first in a series about angels and demons and how the main character Ember, discovers she is a descendant from angels herself. Ember wastes no time in learning about her elemental abilities while realizing that the end of the world is right around the corner and she (along with some new friends) must do their best to stop it from occuring. The story is told from Ember’s viewpoint, and another character named Sawyer who happens to be a demon with a conscious. I am enjoying the story for what it is, and I like that it is told from multiple viewpoints.
I have been spending quite a bit of time on trains lately and I realized that I enjoy train rides simply for the time it gives me to read and be free from other distractions. I find it really easy to get lost in the book as the train takes me to a new destination. Already looking forward to my next train ride! I think next month it might be time to get back to some classical reading.
